Default instrument cluster

My speedometer and odometer don't work. They are telling me it is the instrument cluster. Does that sound right

What model year? Pre 1992, they used a mechanical flexible shaft or cable. The inner cable is prone to break.

Later models are electronic with a sensor. On one of those, when both the speedometer and odometer quit suspect the speed sensor first. The sensor supplies the same signal to both of them. Usually a bad speed sensor will also activate the check engine light.

If i were evil, I would wait till I was ready to sell the car before repairing that problem, lol..

But I'm not, I am avid about keeping records.
