Hi. This wasn't much of a problem in the fall but now that winter is here, it is becoming a real pain. I have an '04 civic ex. My vents do not work. I say vents because it's not only the heat, but the ac does the same thing. And its all vents (feet, the side vents by the doors, the vents above the cd player, and the defrost vents). Regardless of how high I turn them up, the vents put off very little heat (or ac). Any thoughts what could be causing this. If more info is needed, please let me know what else you may need to help troubleshoot...Thank you very much for your help!

 

You're saying the fan inside the car does not run, right?

Locate the fan motor, it is under the dash on the very right side of the car. There's a 2 wire plug into the bottom of it. Probe with a voltmeter on those two wires (still plugged into the motor) with the key on and the dial set for high. If you have 12 volts yet the motor doesn't run, the motor is bad. If you have zero between the two wires, check from either wire to ground. If that's also zero, check the fuse, I think it is under the hood. If you have 12 volts from both wires to ground, run the control panel diagnostic.

My guess is a bad power transistor, but here's how to properly troubleshoot:

 

ok....kinda a dumb question but what is a jumper? is it just a specific wire used to carry a circuit through them or is it actually the cable from a jumper cable? where could I get one? thanks

 

Use any sort of insulated wire, such as an old lamp cord. Cut the appliance and the plug off. Peel the cord in half so it is just one wire. Strip some insulation off of each end to have about half an inch of bare copper.

 

thank you....and ive been calling around, trying to find a transistor and every store/dealership has to special order it...am i asking for the right part? is it just not a commonly replaced part?

 

You run the risk of purchasing an unnecessary power transistor if you don't do tests to verify it is bad.

 

i tested the two wires coming out of the blower motor and get a reading of 12.52V. if i am understanding this correctly, that means that the motor is receiving proper amount of power, just not doing anything with the power = motor needs to be replaced? is it possible that there is **** that got sucked in and clogging the motor?
