Default Is this a leaking rear main?? 87 civic

Hello from OZ.

My brother in law bought himself a first car which is a 87 civic hatch, same 3rd gen series 84-87.

I spent a day on it for him to get it into shape, including the tappet and sump gasket due to oil leaking.

So after taking it for a 50km drive it was leaking oil again.

After initally checking the car day 1 I didnt think that the rear main was leaking as I pulled the inspection plate off and the ring gear / torque converter was dry, no oil. There was signs of a lot of old grime in the bell housing, but not dripping oil.

I D.L. the manual from this site and am confident that I am able to pull the gear box off (auto), although it would be my first FWD gear box pull.

Its not leaking from the distributer or fuel pump.

But shouldnt there be oil in the bell housing area if it is the rear main???

Also looking at the work shop manual I see a right side cover which looks like it is where the rear main would seal. Is it possible or common that this is where the oil is leaking from?.

As per this scaned immage.

Any help from anyone with Civic experience and knowledge would be great.

Also as I have a captive audience on rear main seals, the free manual is missing the section on replacing the seal. Would I be right in thinking its simple, just pull the old one out with a small pick and tap the new one in?

The free manual is also missing the section on the 4 speed auto, which Im thinking that would be the same to remove as the honda matic?

Or a long shot would be for someone to scan these sections of their manual and post.

Thanks again.
