I bought this '97 Civic EX about a month ago. The previous owner had taken off the standard muffler and put one of those little chrome muffler things on the end of the exhaust. It's really loud and becoming a nuisance. I'd like to find a cheap way to muffle it or something. I know I could simply replace it, but with all the little things I've been throwing money at that need fixing immediately, I just haven't got the spare money to have a new exhaust put on right now. I have several other things I must attend to first. So, anybody got any ideas?


(I've looked at silencers, but the smallest size I could find was 3.5", my tailpipe/muffler is 3")

 

Fit a cheap generic oval stock-type muffler on. You will probably need to reduce the pipe where it meets the muffler, as the truck sized generic mufflers with 3" inlets would be too large to fit under the car.

This should keep your neighbors happy for under $50. When you have more money you can replace it with something else.

 

you can also consider going to a junk yard and picking one up there.

 

best bet is to get a use one from the junk yard or on craigslist. i got my stock one for $30

yeah just get a baffle for it,their pretty cheap, mine came with it on the side in a bag, just ask the old owner if he still has it.

 

I guess they don't make silencers that size. I've measured a couple of times to be sure and it's actually 3" from outside to outside on the tailpipe, so the inside is a little smaller.

I guess I'll try Craigslist or something. Thanks for the advice.
