Default Loud grinding

I have a 91 civic dx and as of latley I have been getting this grinding noise from my front right brake area. It doesn't do I all the time and when I completely stop the grinding will stop only for a while, then it will start back up again. Does anyone have any ideas?

Check brake pad thickness. Brake pads usually (the exception being really cheap replacements) have a squeaker spring that makes a loud but harmless noise to tell you when they are almost worn out.

Ok but my question is why would it be grinding if I'm not even using my brakes like just cruising down the freeway

could be many things.
on my dx, it was the dust shield grinding against the disk.
a grinding noise could be the sound of a bad wheel bearing also.
best thing to do is to pull your wheel off, unbolt the caliper, inspect the pads and both sides of the brake disk. You'll need a jack, wheel wrench, 17mm or 14mm (Can't remember) socket + extension, 12mm socket, and possibly a large phillips head screw driver to take the retaining screws out of the disk. My passenger brake disk has a nice half inch wide groove cut into it from that dust shield... =(

Yes, I have, it was worn out brake pads, they are designed to make noise when not pressing the brakes. The noise actually went away when the brakes were applied lightly.
