Where is the smoke coming from? Is the engine overheating? Stop driving the car until you figure out the problem. Best not to do more damage. Start by checking the engine oil and coolant levels.

Default Update

So I finally got a chance to look at it and it sounds pretty bad. I took the heat shield off but that was fine. Here is a pic of the area the smoke and sound is coming from. The sound is when you turn it on and the whole time its on but not constant if you know what I mean. The smoke comes a little later from the section I am showing you, I think its the alternator but I'm a noob so I don't really know. Also, the smoke keeps on coming even after the car is turned off. If it is the alternator, is it a DIY?

The circled component is the power steering (PS) pump. The adjacent reservoir with a red cap holds the PS fluid. Is PS fluid low and dripping/spraying on any of the drive belts (PS, A/C, alternator)?

Also when I looked at the engine, the smoke could have been coming from under what you say is the PS pump. I couldn't really tell. Could that be? Whats under it? It seemed to be having something to do with the belts not turning right. Like they slowed down a little when the noise came.

Directly below the PS pump is the A/C compressor. Any noticeable problems with the power steering or A/C?

Yeah actually, the PS is fine but the A/C has not been working for about 3 weeks before the rattling and smoking. Think that could be it?

Yeah, if the A/C stopped working, it is quite possible that the bearing finally seized after sorta spinning the last 3 weeks. Thus the belt could be rubbing on the a/c pulley that no longer spins with ease, producing smoke from the friction.

I suggest to test it by removing the A/C compressor's belt and starting the car. If both the noise and smoke stop, you have a winner. You can leave the belt off and take out the compressor if you want. OR, get a new compressor and the A/C could possibly work again, yay!!

p.s. more pictures of the lady friend...

...oh, sure, some car ones too.

I say check your belts and make sure nothing is loose or caught in there.
