Over the summer I purchased a 2000 Honda Civic sedan, manual transmission. For the age of the car, I was amazed to see it was in great condition, as it was owned be seniors prior. They also were snow birds (I'm Canadian) and the car rarely saw winter conditions.

For the most part, things have been running smoothly with minor bumps in the road.

Recently, I was driving home from the highway (about 100 km/hour), when I thought my ears were ringing, until my boyfriend confirmed he could hear the noise too. It was very brief, but that's what the noise sounded like. When we were near home, it briefly made the noise again, this time about 50-60 km/hour.

Now, it's doing it quite frequently and the loud "ringing" is lasting longer each time. Happens at all speeds.

Any thoughts? Has anyone experienced this before? When I mentioned it to my mechanic, he was very confused. Before I bring it in, I'd like to have a few ideas as to what the issue may be.

hard to say without hearing the noise myself. A really "tinny" metallic rattle is often that one of the heat shields around the exhaust system is loose. They rust away and become partly detached.

 

is the sound static or does it reverbarate im thinking your description sounds like a loose Serpentine belt kinda like this
