Default Maint. Req'd light

Hey whats up people, my fiance' has a 2002 Civic EX auto, has about 100k on I. A couple weeks ago she told me that a light was flashing on the dash then go away. I took it for a drive and it was the Maint. Req'd light. I threw on a reader to see if it had any codes, but no it was not a CEL. I am just wondering what would trigger that light. Today the light came on and is not going away. Thanks for any help!
