If the Check Engine Light (CEL) doesn't turn ON when the distributor fails, then I would see no need to replace the distributor housing. More likely, you are having a problem with the coil or igniter unit. The pictures below detail how to troubleshoot them. Also be sure to check the G101 ground connection and wire.

Replacing the entire distributor is probably overkill as replacing a much less expensive single component within the distributor would also likely solve the problem.

Have you carefully inspected the G101 ground as well as all wires leading to the distributor and within it? You may have either poor grounding or a damaged wire(s) that is shorting out.

You need to be sure the plastic insulator plate is in place under the rotor, or sparks can jump around inside the dizzy and burn stuff up.

A couple people here have reported that running with a spark plug wire disconnected ended up burning out their coil. If you have a bad wire or plug it will put stress on the coil.

Try using OEM cap, rotor and wires. Some aftermarket ones are really bad.
