Default New to Civic's/Car repair in general.

I just bought a used 1995 Civic DX. 1.5 VTEC. Automatic. I had been driving it with no problems for the first couple of weeks in 35 to 50 degree weather with no problems. Well the other day I took it on a little bit longer drive with about 75 degree weather and it started to heat up. The temp raised on the gauge very fast and then it got to about 3/4 of the way up. I stopped the car at my destination with it this way but my engine was idling really hard. I let the car cool down and checked my fluids. It had no radiator fluid and when I tried to start it my engine was still idling very hard. I changed out the fluid in the radiator. Well I started driving back home. (About 45 miles.) The heat did not go up at all but my car would get to about sixty miles and high rev, then it would upshift and lose power. Then it would downshift and high rev again. Then it felt like I was losing gears and power. My car slowed to a stop and then just puttered out on me. I checked my fluids again and all were normal and I did not lose any radiator fluid. The car would not start again after that. This car is like a starter car for me. So it would be good if I could fix it myself.

It has gas. Sorry. I meant it is a VTEC engine. I don't know the size I just know what it says when I open the hood. It is trying to start but it is just turning over now.
