Default P420, Manifold/Cat Converter - any effects?

2000 civic dx, 220K miles.

Serivce Engine light on , only code is P420. Manifold/Cat Converter.

Questions:
1) Does this condition cause any problems, like rough idle?
2) Can I do any damage if I ignore it?

P0420 tells you that the cat converter is dead or that there is an exhaust leak. There should be no performance problems, unless the cat is clogged and restricting the release of exhaust gas from the engine. This would generally manifest as power loss.

In some states, a CEL or bad cat will cause you to fail an emissions test.
