Default problem

i got a 99 civic ex with 109,000 miles on it, i heard you are supposed to change out the timing belt at 75k, but i never did, is that true? Also (this may be from the timing belt issue) my car will randomly start studdering around 35 mph, not all the time just sometimes, my cars an auto, but its like 3rd gear when this happens. anyone have any suggestions or any info that will help me out?

experts prefer that u change timing belts every 75 K to 100K but i'm at 100,000 even rite now and i haven't even changed my timing belt man. my instructor at mechanics class tells me he recommends we switch timing belts at about 110 K and strap it to the engine, that way if ur new timing belt has issues u always have a spare so u won't have to worry about being stranded in the middle of no where. but usually timing belts can last awhile. it just depends on how often u drive ur car. like my dad drove our toyota with the timing belt for 140,000 and never had to switch it out. as with the studdering in ur car i'm assuming u just need to get ur transmission checked, also get ur transmission fluid changed. transmission fluid is recommended to be changed out every 2 years or 20,000 mi. so yea. check on that.

Timing belt longetivity also depends on your driving style and what kind of environment/climate you live in. It's true that Honda belts hold up unusually well compared to the recommended changing interval, but I think you would do well to replace it soon, just in case. You could probably get by with another 75k+ if you wanted to, but it just isn't very reliable after a certain amount of time. If it breaks, you'll probably be in more trouble (and more money) than you would if you just replace it while it's still in one piece.
