Angry Problems with car shutting off at idle

I drive a '95 Civic LX, Auto, not V-TEC, SOHC, 1.6L, blah blah blah...I am new to this forum. I pretty much joined to see if anyone can help me with my car problems. a little over a month ago, I noticed, while sitting at a red light with the A/C on, the car started to shake really bad. I have a lot of friends who work on cars (most of them work with Nissans since they are drifters, though), but they have a basic knowledge of cars and said it's probably the IAC valve. I let it go until about 2 weeks ago when the car began to shut off when I would stop at a red light or put the car in park. It was minor at first and would crank right back up. In the last week and a half, though, it's giving me even more problems. I'm having to hold the gas with the break when I'm stopped to keep the RPM's over 1000 so it doesn't shut off. I had a friend clean everything out with engine cleaner, including the IAC. The car seemed to get a little better....for a couple of days. Then it got bad again. Now it's getting worst. It's getting to wear it doesn't want to crank very easily. In these economic hard times I do not really have a bunch of money to be dumping into this car. I could not afford a brand new IAC so I bought one at a used parts store. I had a friend put it on but the car is doing the same thing, so he played around with it some and now thinks it's the Throttle Position Sensor. For the simple fear of buying the wrong part, I tried pulling codes using a paperclip. I got a 14 and a 17, with 14 being IAC. I know 17 says speed sensor? My speedometer is always acting up so I'm not as concerned about that one. I just want to fix the problem with the car shutting off. Please help?? I was trying to get a TPS before the weekend so I can take it to my boyfriend in Greenville, NC but no one seems to carry them and the dealership will only sell me the whole throttle body (over $600.00??!!). Thanks in advance for any help any of you can give me.

For a quick fix, try turning the big air adjusting screw in the top of the throttle body counterclockwise. That will admit more air to the engine and help it idle faster.

Remove the IAC and check that the air passages for it in the manifold are clear.
