Default question w/ transmission

ok i accidentally took a turn at 50 mph and the tires screeched and i accidentally hit the gears and shifted it to neutral while i was turning. after i stopped i realized i was in neutral and just got in drive. did i do any damage to anything?

neutral drops aren't good for an automatic transmission, but i don't think just one would cause any problems. i'm sure your transmisson is fine.
what kind of turn were you taking, anyway? dang

You're fine. You just made a normal start from stopped. The important thing is not to shift gears with the engine revved up.

A neutral drop is when someone tries to make a fast start in a drag race by revving the engine in neutral and then "dropping" into gear. They won't be doing that for very long.

lol, i had always thought a neutral drop was if you bump it into neutral while driving (idk why someone would do this... maybe to rev their engine at you? idk). lol. what you said makes more sense though, mk378.

i think some hypermilers might do what you said trustdestruction to save on fuel though most seem to do this with hybrids.

is it really a bad thing to shift to neutral on an auto tranny? if so, why?

No, in fact when stopping on snow/ice you have more control by shifting into neutral when braking. The bad part is if you have the engine revved up and shift it back into drive. The higher the RPMs the worse it is for your tranny.

ok... that's what i thought. I just wanted to see if what the previous poster said was right. It's essentially like a manual clutch. You can burn the clutch at high revs if you don't match revs. Same thing for auto. I get it.

Thanks.
