What year Civic? When did you last replace the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor? If those are fine, then the first thing to try would be to clean the IACV on the throttle body. See IACV link in my signature.

That leads to more questions.

How many miles on the engine and when did you last replace the engine oil?

Is the odor due to leaking oil from the engine? If so, where is the oil leaking from?

Or is the odor from burning oil in the exhaust? When you are driving is smoke coming from the exhaust? If so, what color (white, bluish, black) is the smoke?

well when i bought the car the guy wasnt sure how many miles were on it so i had the engine completely rebuilt new rings, bearings, gaskets, pistons, connecting rods everything was replaced. and i have only drivin it for about 7000 miles since and i have changed the oil once since at 5000 miles and i havent noticed and oil leaking on the engine and my friend has said he has seen black smoke coming out of the exhaust only for alittle bit tho??? i guess that would explain why there is always black **** on the back of my car right above the exhaust?? what does that mean?

Black smoke and soot means running too rich (=bad gas mileage and possible destruction of cat).
