Default replacing clutch, should I consider rebuild trans at 247K too?

Advice?

I have been planning (for awhile now) to replace my clutch/resurface my flywheel. I get this burning smell when I shift in traffic a lot, the clutch slips at higher RPMs, releases almost at the top, so I'm pretty sure the car needs this.

But my HX trans has 247K on it, and I noticed that under HARD acceleration it pops out of 2nd gear. When I'm just driving normally, which is most of the time, it is fine. Goes into gear easily almost all the time, no grinding or anything.

Is this attributable to the clutch? Or do yall think a tranny rebuild is in the near future?

If I wasnt working like crazy in this med program I'd probably just swap a used trans in when I did the clutch...however, I have no time to mess w/ my cars for now so someone else will do the work. And since you gotta take off the trans anyway, is it worth a rebuild at this point?

Thanks

to rebuild it would cost more then a used one. i would buy a used one some where with way less miles, and when you take it in to have the clutch changed just have them put the trans u bought in insteed of the old one.

Agree, maybe throw an engine in there too if you have the money....

Thanks...

Yeah, I found a few HX trans around here w/ low miles, but they were about 800-900. I don't trust the whole ebay transmission thing, one of my buddies got screwed on that. If I rebuild, at least it'll have a warranty, but then again, a good used one should be fine - on the fence about that.

As for the engine thing, the only thing I have wrong w/ the engine is a small oil leak, maybe quarter overnight. Other than that it runs strong, gets 40mpg...so I dont know if I should drop a new engine in yet. Dont really have the money thanks to school, actually, b/c I did find a HX engine w/ only 64K on it for 650 shipped...

Ok, looks like everyone says swap it out. But do you really think my trans and engine is on the way out?

Engine seemsjust like a seal, and trans could be a bushing? Since I have no other trans sxs...The first 200K of the car it was driven by a middle age woman, just a long country commute. 20K some kid had it, beat it I'm sure, then I've had it for 20K, taken care of it. Burns no oil at all - none. I was hoping to get 300K out of both...

But Idid finda HX engine and transmission locally, 66K on both out of a wreck, 100 day warranty, said they tested out fine. $750 trans, 1000 engine, if i bring them my engine and trans from my car.

And cost of having a rebuilder swap all of these out? I'll call later, but any ideas?

Just sucks, I have a year left of school so I am short on money. Have about a grand to spend to fix it up, maybe $1500 if I'm lucky. I guess I could ride it out and hope it lasts another 20K through next year, we'll see. thanks
