Default Roulette Wheel sounds while driving

Just want some reassurance before I spend the money. 2006 Honda Civic 5 speed
Rattling or almost a roulette wheel sound once you move through the first 3 gears. Sound is rotational and speeds/slows with the momentum of the car. With the vehicle in N it purrs like a kitten. Noise is at low rpms and dissappears after 3rd(don't know if it spins to fast or road noise drowns it) also the noise does not happen all the time but more frequent than not. We jacked the car up and went through the gears and it made 0 noise.
137k miles all stock as far as I know. My mechanic says it's the clutch... he knows his stuff but would like a second opinion. He himself said he can't be 100 percent sure and I understand that. I just don't want to spend the money and its the transmission.
Thank you for any help!
