Speedo not accurate

Speedo not accurate
Hi,
I've noticed that my speedo reads about 7% faster than my actual speed. I checked the site below for expected differential due to tires changing from 185 65 R14's to 205 40 R17's and there's practically no change.
Speedometer Calibration Calculator And Information
http://www.csgnetwork.com/speedocalibcalc.html
I contacted a speedo shop here locally and when I told him I had a 2000 Civic Dx Coupe with an analog gauge, he said nothing can be done to calibrate it and that that is the problem with Japanese cars, they all do that. He then referred me to the dealer.
Personally, I think he's full of it because I've had several other Toyota's and Honda's and have never had this problem. Perhaps I should have have pointed out that although it's an analog gauge, the system is electronic, deeming it adjustable/repairable.
Any input on this would be appreciated.
Thanks
Selvan

RE: Speedo not accurate
You got to take your cluster apart. On the speedometer needle try to lift it up but not all the way out.Since you are going 7% faster with your finger push it up what ever 7% is for you. Example 10 mph, 15, 20 etc.....Hold it there and then with some really thin pliers or tweezer or something hold tight the little thin metal below the face gaugethat holds the plastic needle and then when is tight .....hold it in place and push the needle back to 0 mph. push the needle back in...Hope this help. That is how i fixed my gauges...[&:]

Are you serious! That is crazy, was this a factory defect or what? I only bought this Civic a month or so ago and it's my first. I had an Odyssey a few years back and the speedo was right on. Strange.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your own experience and I'll definitely look into this more.

RE: Speedo not accurate
I bought a JDM cluster of ebay but the speedometer gauge had been temper with so I had to set it properly[&:] ... Tire size don't matter because when I had 15 inch wheels (stock) and NOW with 17 inch it reads the same. I don't see a difference.

RE: Speedo not accurate
Hey, I have the same size summers, on Motegi MR7's I found that I was going about 110, when the speedo said 100, there is a change even thought they'll says there isn't. I dunno about changin the speedo, cause you'll have to make the same change twice every season. Unless you live in California or something. I just did the conversion in my head whenever I saw the po-po with the radar.

RE: Speedo not accurate
I hope that po-po with the radar is not how you found out the speedo was off! Yeah, I'm in Cal so I'd only have to change the speedo needle once but the problem with that is that it will only be accurate for one set speed, the one I set the needle to. As soon as I speed up or slow down, it'll be off again.
I'll just have to get use to adding-to the speedo in my head.
