Default speedo not working/location

hey,

just replaced the alternator on my 1.5 1990 civic (4 door).. everything went smooth but now noticing the speedo isn't working, related or not it works sometimes but more often doesn't work and the engine light comes on some of the times but not all..

any suggestions? also where is it located on this car? driver side firewall i take it?

also when its not working my odometer doesn't work...

Civics before 1992 use a mechanical system. There is a flexible cable from the top of the transmission to the speedometer head. Inside the head is a speed sensor which feeds the ECU. So if the speedometer is not turning, the CEL will come on with a code 17.

Disconnect the cable at the transmission end and pull the core out see if it is broken.

weird... haven't had time to look at the issue and has been about a week and all of the sudden it has started to work again! strange.
