Default Speedometer

Hello All,

I am new to the forum. I have a 1996 Civic EX (US Version)

So my problem is this...I would be driving at 60 mph or so and my speedometer needle would go nuts and then end up a 0mph and stay there. This was ongoing for a while, now it just stays at 0 mph and the odometer isn't moving either.

Call some people, one said its the speed sensor
Another said that because the 'check engine' light was not on, it was the speedometer itself in the cluster

What should I do? Is there any way to know which connection it is on the back of the cluster? Is this a common problem? Any fixes?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
