Default speedometer is dead.

yeah so my speedo is dead in the water in my 96 civic and the rest of the cluster is working just fine. so my first thought is the speedo sensor, but i was just wondering if there is a way to check the sensor to make sure its bad before i go and get a new one. ANY IDEAS???

You can test it by measuring voltage.

Is the odometer working?

Not sure how to do it exactly, but it involves, hooking up the multimeter and spinning the wheels to check voltage or whatever (I am not an electrical expert). There are guides out there on how to check it. Replacing it should be a simple task as well.

The 3 wires on the sensor are power (battery voltage), ground, and output. I don't remember the wire colors offhand. You would first confirm that the power wire has power (with the key on, engine not running) and the ground wire is zero volts. Then connect meter to the output wire (minus on ground) and lift one of the front wheels up off the ground. Put the transmission in neutral (engine not running) and rotate the wheel slowly by hand. The output wire voltage should pulse on and off.
