Speedometer ... it's not working!!!! I'm at 0mph!
Hi all - help? The speedometer on my 1985 Honda Civic (84,000 miles) has just stopped working. Thus, I'm driving at 0 mph... anyone know how to fix this one? There is nothing in the Honda-Civic-Bible on how to fix.
Thanks all! [&:]

The cable has probably broken. Disconnect it at the transmission end (first photo) There is a rubber boot over the whole thing that is not shown, simply slide it up until you see the clip. Once detached from the transmission, pull the center core out. It should be long enough to make it to the back of the speedometer, and be ground down square on the end. If broken, it will be frayed and broken usually somewhere near whare it makes the sharp turn to go thru the firewall.
If the inner cable seems OK, push it back in and spin it (both ways) while someone watches the speedometer. If that works maybe it just wasn't fully engaged in the transmission. A lot of times the clip has been lost and it can work loose. It is good ot put some grease on the cable before finally reassembling.
If broken, the cable and housing are replaced as a unit. You will need to remove the gauge assembly inside the car to release the other end of the housing.
