Default starts and cuts off

I have a 2001 honda civic lx, when i start it the engine will not idle the only way i can keep running is by holding my foot on the gas pedal keeping the engine rpm up. I checked the battery voltage and altenator it all checks ok. Has any one incountered this problem?

I think these are MAF controlled; an air leak in the intake will do that on a MAF system. It will not run slow but if you press the gas enough there will be enough airflow so the air leak is not significant. On the older models with MAP control, air leaks will make it idle fast out of control.

If you can barely press the gas and get a normal idle, also consider the IACV.

Take IACV off, you'll see a screen in there that get's clogged...when it does it stops functioning properly and does what you're describing. It can also be just plain broken, but that doesn't happen often.
