Default Swapped Engine, new engine =?

Hi folks, I just bought myself a 1994 Honda Civic CX and well the guy who owned it before swapped the engine in the vehicle and I am not sure if it was a Vtec engine before or not. But there is a Vtec engine in it now...so what's the best way for me to find out the engine model and if this is even possible to do in the first place? Basically he told me I need to take it to a dealership for the engine to be rewired. I called up the dealship and he said that the 94 doesn't even have Vtec yet..it was after 96 that the first generation Vtec was released. So they wont do the work on it. So now I am all confused as hell.

Basically the question comes to are :
1) Where can I find out what kind of engine it is..
2) Was this even possible
3) Where can I take this to get serviced on (I live in Columbus, OH)
well 4,5, and 6 questions depend on what kind of answers the first 3 questions get... lol
there is 1 big thing wrong with the car..when it starts up from cold...the damn thing revs at 4500RPM and then it drops when the car is warm enough and it drops slowly down to 2000rpm-3000rpm and then you can hear something settling down in there and it drops to 1000rpm..a little above that. It really kills my gas, its a 1/4 tank for like 2 day trips of back and forth to work, work is only 2.5 miles away... and its freaking loud cause of the sports exhaust system in it.

I am not good at all with cars and I always wanted to learn but no one will teach me and I don't have another vehicle that I can rely on to take this one apart to be doing DIY things. Anyways thanks ahead for all your responses!

Find the engine number on the side of the engine, it's on a flat area machined into the front where it meets the transmission.

You may find it's simpler to trade your engine for the proper stock one and convert the car back to stock if you want a simple daily driver.

See if you can find identification numbers on the body, transmission, and engine (see picture here and in next post).

Also if you can, post a picture of the top of the engine and the intake manifold, you may have quite a mixmash of parts there.
