More likely bulb burnout. Change the bulbs and see if that helps, if not then it's a wiring problem <-- difficult and time consuming.

when you replace the bulbs, check to see that the brake light bulbs aren't staying on constantly (faulty switch @ pedal) - burns out the bulbs in the first place

Were your rear tail lights on when you turn the lights on? if they were then it may be a faulty brake switch behind the brake peddle

you can take a bulb and take an ohmmeter to see if it is good.
saves the time of going and buying one only to find out that it is not the problem.

I had this exact same problem and it was just the bulb. Make sure when you check the bulb to look at it in bright light cause it can be pretty difficult to determine in the dark.
