Default Timing Question...

O.k. so i'm puttin on a valve cover i painted at the moment, soi put the crank in the tdc postion. Took the valve cover off, kinda was just lookin around checkin it all out. So i check out the cam gear and noticed that the "up" mark on it is upside down, facing down not up... Is it supposed ta be like that or is my timing out of wack? Could this be the reason why my car wont start or no?

Turn the crank all the way around exactly one turn, back to TDC, and check again. For every full turn the crank makes, the cam turns half a turn. So there are two differrent states of TDC. The one where UP is up on the cam pulley is called TDC1 and is used for setting the timing.

Ok so turn it one more time on the crank and up should be up? How can you tell if it hasnt jumped a tooth? Also Should the timing belt be loose say toward the front of the car and tight toward the rear? Thanks alot for the intel....

You don't have to set yourengine to TDC to take the valve cover off...

Only real way to tell if it is off a tooth would that it will run really ****ty. There is no way it is as off as you say it is and still run, if you did try to start it when it is off that much your valves would hit the pistons and ruin them.

Always turn the crank counterclockwise looking at the pulley, the direction it turns when the engine is running. This will make the belt tight on the front of the car. The other side should not be very loose. When you reach TDC1, the two lines on the face of the cam pulley should be approximately even with the top edge of the head, within one belt tooth.

Trust me you can't get a vac line off unless you are trying to. Even is one was disconnected it would still run but the idle would loop.
