Default top end rattle-please help

Iinherited a 98EX coupe that has a rattle/knock above #1 cylinder from about 2300 rpm on. It does not do this under load and has good compression. I pulled the valve cover--valve train appears to be in good working order. I do not know much about the v-tec unit above the rocker arms-could this be causing the noise? also below 2300 rpm the engine runs very well. Any insight would be appreciated.

Before you go tearing the engine apart, check the heatshields around the catalytic converter. Its a very common problem. read this:

I like the clamp(7" fits perfect) method, although you may need to put it on tight, then go back and retighten while its good and hot(the clamp expands with the heat).
