Default trans. issue or throw out bearing

2002 civic lx

when i have the clutch in and the car is running my car is pretty silent...but if i have it in neutral and let out the clutch there is like a sound that is pretty faint...so i took it to a local shop that races civics and he thinks that it was the throw out bearing...so my question is when i am driving sometimes once i get past 3500 rpm a similar noise gets louder and was wondering if this was anything i should get checked out or if everything is just fine.

It's either a noisy throw-out bearing or a noisy bearing inside the tranny.

Idle the engine, tranny in neutral, clutch engaged (pedal NOT pressed down). It'll be making the noise, right?

Press the clutch pedal just a bit. Does the noise go away when you begin pressing? If so, it would be the throw-out bearing. If it doesn't go away until you press the pedal most of the way down, then it's a tranny noise.

Other check... when idling, press the clutch pedal down suddenly & quickly, all the way. If it's a tranny shaft bearing you should hear it coast to a stop over a couple seconds.

yea it might be the tranny shaft bearing cause it does fade out if i do that...so if it is the tranny shaft bearing should that be replaced soon or is it something not too critical?

The throw out bearing will NOT be turning when the clutch pedal is not pressed. Pull the lever by hand toward the slave cylinder to make absolutely sure it is not touching. If you still have noise it is almost certainly from inside the transmission. All the clutch parts are locked together at that point.

Course if you're going to pull the transmission to replace the bearings in it, a clutch job at the same time would not be a bad idea.

Does Honda do that different on Civics compared to others (Integra, Accord)?

There should be a spring inside of the slave cylinder. It pushes the piston out against the T-O fork, which in turnpresses the T-O bearing lightly against the PP.

If they didn't do that, the slave would retract, & you'd have to use the first 6 or 8 inches of pedal just to bring the T-O bearing into contact with the PP. Then you'd have no more pedal-travel to actually disengage the clutch.
