Transmission faint grinding noise

Theres a faint whinning noise coming from my transmission. I can hear it while im driving in gear and it only happens when the car is in gear. It is a 1999 manual transmission with about 179,000 km. Its a stock clutch and tranny. Is it a sign my clutch needs to be replaced or something? Is my transmission dying? any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
