used JDM or junkyard D16Y8
First of all I was driving 60 mph, then noticed that I had no acceleration at all, pulled over and noticed there was a clacking noise coming form the engine, not sure if it was from the bottom or top. a local mechanic said it was either crankshaft, bearings or both. So on a budget there is a shop that will install a jdm with all new seals waterpump and timing belt for 1350.00 or another person that can do it for 800.00 with an engine from the junkyard(he does a visual and compression check on these engines) both have a 12 month warranty. What do yall think? Jdm or Junkyard? Also why did my engine give out? It had 150k, I just got car recently not idea how last guy treated my car. I paid 3k for car and fixed up the interior completly. Also the only abuse if you want to call it that from my end was like 2 or 3 times I stompped on the gas pedal to see of I could fell the vtec kick in. The whole time i have had the car it ran fine once i got rid of the bugs like plugs, wires. so what are the pros and cons of each?
You answered your own question:
800 isn't a bad price for a motor and labor to change it as long as these are reputable people. Whether the motor is junkyard or JDM doesn't matter in this case, what matters is how many miles are on these motors and how they were treated before, I'd go with the junkyard option, though.
See if the guy will let you assist (or at the very least watch) so you can learn something while your car is down.

Well i just went with a junkyard motor for my car. The motor has 35k on it. Paid $625 for the motor shipped to my work from NC. I put it in my self and it runs great.
So i say go with the junkyard motor. I would think it would be alot easyer and cheaper to find parts for a d16y8 then a JDM motor.

yea, it will have a 12 month warranty so thats good, plus I will be there when the transplant happens for the educational value, maybe it it happens to a friend of mine I will have the kahonas to do the swap my self. I got to admit I think I fell for my civic, I always considered myself a truck and american sports car guy but I guess when it all boils down Im just a car guy and thats it. If not I prob would of pushed it into the lake. I mean even what you might consider a POS car had a ton of hours of engineering behind it. For every piece to fit within a fraction of an inch is just awsome. So even that POS car is kinda a piece of art atleast to me it is.
