Default VTEC NOT WORKING!! Please Help!

So i drove my friend's '98 civic and his vtec kicks in at like 5700 and its very clear that it kicks in. you can hear it and feel it. my car a '95 civic on the other hand makes no difference in sound or feel between 5k and 7k....its definately a vtec motor...my other friends '94 does the same thing as mine does...could this be an ECU problem or what? has this happened to anyone else? i know the '98 has the d16y8 and i have the d16z6 but i should still be able to feel and hear the vtec.......whats the deal?

I've heard from a few eg owners that its not that noticeable, but I can definitely hear it on my 99 w/y8. You shouldnt however really be able to feel it, as its not a significant change in horsepower. But it's like installing a cat-back, you hear the new sound and it makes it seem as if you've added lots of power.

why would someone rev their car up to 5000 rpms?

i just see no purpose in it, just my opinion.

i agree - hard on the engine.
has been recently covered in the forum.
better to do it while the car is moving.
