Default Wining Noise in Reverse

When I shift my 97 LX into reverse and start backing up a fairly loud wining noise comes from the from of the vehicle. the car has 57,000 miles on it. any thoughts?

the teeth on your forward gears are helical shaped, because they don't make a lot of noise.
reverse gears are spur (or straight) cut and make more noise because of this

My 06 Civic 2dr coupe does it. I hate that noise. I guess I have to live with it. The car only has 9,000 miles on it also.

all cars do it - i love that noise, rally cars have spur gearing - cool noise when they are on the go!
