Default 1st car - swap or upgrade?

Hey, I got my first car (96' DX 4dr) last weekend for $2,600.it came with black 17's and a car bra. Just your regular white ferio. i'm not sure what engine i have, i think it is a D16Y6? SOHC non vtec. Maybe there is an engine code or something that i could read and find out. anyways, my question is should i see what i can get out of my stock motor, or save my money for a swap. if i go the swap route, do you have any sugestions?

i wish i was makin 8.20/hr.
you got everything right except for the name of the enine. d16y7. close!
well seein that your real tight on money. i would say. jus do a head swap from the d16y8. comes from the civic ex. get you a lil more hp, like 25ish. and youll have vtec! i think its weak tho.
sincei cant really tell you how to do this, ill give you a link! https://www.hondacivicforum.com/m_45390/tm.htm

but if youre serious into building this civic, no matter how long itll take, dont do to much to this motor. jus wait it out. enjoy the gas mileage. and save money to drop ina new engine. thats what id do.

anyways, my question is should i see what i can get out of my stock motor

the d16 does have potential. a turbo d16 is a way to get a decent amount of power for cheap. rather than buying a new stronger motor for2000+ dollarsthen spending more to build that motor. but of course thenew motor will have more potential to be even stronger.
