Default Clutch Problem

My mechanic tells me today my clutch is going bad. I need a little help before I drop 783.00 on a new clutch. This is what my 92 civic is doing. While driving and I have to stop at a light the car stalls when I down shift. When it doesn't stall it it drops to about 300 rpms. It has also, stall when shifting on the freeway. Is there a definate way to check if it is the clutch? Thanks Guys. Oh yeah my civic has 147k and runs like a top until about 3 days ago when the stalling started.
