A huge problem with turbo setups is the need for the turbo to have fresh oil. I plan on turboing my car in the future and have been toying around with an idea for a separate turbo sump. I really dont like the idea of having a pair of holes in my oil pan. The thought of having an oil leak and frying my engine and/or turbo scares me. It would also give the opportunity to use different oils for your engine and turbo. Most turbo cars need full synthetic, so I'm guessing that a turbo likes full syenthetic. I've always been told Honda engines dont need full synthetic (older motors) because its considerably thicker than conventional or even sythetic blend. I think it might also help keep engine temperatures down. Since the engine and tubo both put off heat, keeping their oil separate might help one or the other to run a little cooler. Also, the general rule is that you put an extra quart of oil in the pan for the turbo, a 3-4 quart sump could be compact and help the turbo, once again, stay cooler..and possibly help it last longer. If it works its probably been done before. Anyone have any thoughts or maybe some info to add?

Edit: I know you tap into the block oil feeds to get pressure for the turbo, but an inline oil pump would be pretty simple. All in all its a complicated solution for a few simple problems, but I might try it of people think it will actually work

 

Oil lines can be a weak link in a turbo system and can cause major damage if done wrong but its really not all that hard to do right. I personally dont think its worth going to the trouble but if you really feel like doing it I dont see why it wouldnt work.

Ok, like I said I just had this idea knocking around and wanted to get it out. I may try it if i ever get around to actually turboing my car. Turbo oiling is a really simple thing and no one has ever had the idea to do anything innovative. If I do it and it catches on, great. If not, at least I'll be different

 

I was toyign around with the idea of a remote mounted turbo on a civic and than I would have needed a separate sump in the trunk for the turbo.

 

for the oil feed a sandwich adapter simplifies that ALOT, and for hte oil return, just get a steel pan and have the oil pan tap for the retrun line welded really well, i dont think its that big of a deal, lots of people are just running synthetic oil throughout there whole engine on turbo setups, so its definitely a doable thing, IMO its not worht the hassle....
