Default turbo help newbie

Hey guys howdy from a newbie here....

Got a few questions about my car here goes I'm not really sure how u guys identify your engines such as b16 or b18 or all this other stuff that i don't know what it is.... So heres what I got, 93 honda civic lx 4dr, the motor is a 1.5 16v... I'm a diesel tec and I build turbo systems for them and I got to thinking well hey maybe my car would do good with a turbo cam intake and an exaust, my problem is I need to know whitch engine I have (b16 b18 all that cr@p) and also what for problems normally arise from this type of setup with this paticular engine...

You've got a D15B7 1.5 liter SOHC engine.

On Hondas, that engine code breaks down as follows: D series block, 1.5 liter (D15), B7 is the type of head. B7 is non-vtec.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_d_engine#D15B7 That'll give you some basic info on the engine. Welcome to the forum.

I found a really reasonably priced setup for the car on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA...Q5fAccessories I was just wondering how much boost I could run safely on my engine...

I'm not sure if a D15b7 is a good platform to start on. Most of the guys on here with turbo setups used D16, B16, or B18 engines. I'm sure others would tell you to swap in an entirely different engine. It all depends on your goals.

And I've heard that you should NEVER use ebay turbo kits. Some parts in those kits are okay but others will fail very soon and destroy your engine.

Well as far as "my goals" I'm not looking for massive hp I just need an extra 30 to 50 horse more than what it already has.. Its just a commuter and I just need a little more power cause I kinda got used to driving a 550 horse cummins around and now I got this little car so I can save on gas...

mini me swaps are fairly common and a pretty easy way to gain something like 20hp. Also, if you just want a gain of 30-50hp, I'm going to say a turbo setup is a little overkill. People usually shoot for 200whp minimum with a turbo kit.

I think a vtec head swap, a stage II cam (and full valvetrain if you can spare the cash), and an intake, header, and a cat-back exhaust should put you around a 50hp gain. If you want a little more power, you could add an aftermarket intake manifold, a bigger throttle body, and a high-flow cat.
