WTF?!?!
Ok cool I'll do that tomorrow. What exactly is it though? And now that I'm thinking back on it, it sorta did seem like the smoke the other day was coming from the the turbo. I couldn't find any leaks or anything around the turbo though so I figured it was just the oil I was leaking, but it was leaking on the other side of the block. And if I rub it down with oil to get that stuff off, won't the oil burn when the turbine heats up?
any oil get on the housing? or were your hands greasy when you touched all over it? how many friends held it or picked it up before you instaled. i know i cant have a turbo in our garage without the whole world walking in a picking it up saying "a turbo!!! i wish i had one!!!" lol looks caked though. i have seen rusty housings but yours is too new. i cant tell whats up
Its def from too many finger prints. I know that because I handle guns alot. They will tend to get like that if they havent been cleaned.
edit. I would like to add thats its only surface rust. Its not dangerous and wont eat your housing in a week. But clean it off with grill cleaner if you can.

I talked to Turbonetics, and they said it was normal for the housings to rust, but they almost never happen that quickly. What happened was, I had the car running, it got up to operating temp, and the thin layer of oil that was on the housing burned off. I shut the car off thinking the smoke was bad, and let it cool down. Now the metal was completely exposed, and since it had been raining like that entire week, it was extremely moist out, so it rusted right up. Turbonetics said the rust and the smoke were both normal.
