ORIGINAL: krisfnbs

Okay so ive owened bought my civic with 176k from my buddy about a year ago. It currently has 198k..I needed brakes badly. When I brake my whole steering wheel shakes like CRAZY. that pretty much sums it up. I told my friend to just change the brake pads like 10k miles ago and it stopped the problem for a little while but over time he told me if I didnt change my rotors and calipers that the pads would wear down much faster than they should...or something like that so my question is.

What exactly do I need to buy to get my brakes

Decent:

Good:

EXCELLENT:

thx for any help

Kris
Try doing your brakes yourself. Get a service manual. Fronts on a Civic are REALLY easy. If your friend knew what they were doing, they would have insisted that you either machine or replace your rotors before putting new pads on. They should also have lubed the slidepins in the calipers, so they don't glaze the surfaces by not releasing.

I just replaced my front pads and rotors for under $80 and 1hr of sucking down sodas with a wrench in my hand. The calipers were good to go after I lubed the slidepins.

Well my friend did tell me that I should get new rotors and such and a while new front end braking system because I needed it but I just told him if he put the pads on would it help the problem and he said yeah it would a little and it acctually did... but that was over 10k miles ago more like 15k miles ago and now I think my pads are really worn down, or unevenly so im going to go ahead and do a full front braking system correctly this time with my friend...im not paying anyone to do this crap its easy especially with the service manual.... thanks everyone for your help!!!!!

Are you talking about a set screw that holds the rotor on? You may be able to cut off the rotor with a Dremel tool cutoff wheel. Stuff the area around the rotor, first with something to keep the debris from falling in too far.
