Default 97 civic lx sedan auto trans issue

transmission won;t engage into gear or slips and jerks after warm. do these trannys fail often? what kind of trans does this model carry, in case i need a replacement. the fluid is bright red. i hear their is a cvt transmission and a different one that they could have.

You should be able to figure it out using your VIN and the diagram below.

Is the CEL ON or is the D4 light blinking?

I acually just read about this problem, It also most common with the 97's. I would just replace it, maybe a new one or even used if you don't think you can afford a new one. If I was going to replace one I would put in a 5 speed manual. There pretty durable and I heard they last forever. They are also fun to drive and get pretty good gas mileage. But again the CVT also gets very good gas mileage and is very good if that's all our really looking for (as in no power upgrades.) If this is just your daily driver then a CVT would probably be great for you. If you need anymore info on the CVT just ask.

Use Honda or Honda recommended tranny fluid.
