Default auto vs. manual

okay...i've read thru quite a few posts debating this topic. but i've still got a few questions. it seems that most of the discussions concern daily driving. what if you want to run 11's or better in 1/4 mile. i've got friends who race mustangs, camaro's, ect... they run auto's and swear by them. they said if i want to run this quick...then the auto is the way to go. their argument...you can't shift as fast as a cpu. i'm inclined to beleive them...but they have rear-wheel drive with rebuilt trans & diffs. they said i should consider rebuilding an auto with performance parts. not an easy task to find parts. what do you guys think??? should i be happy with what have??? is this even a wise change???

any advice would be much appreciated.

by the way...i have a '95 civic w/turbo & manual lsd that runs in the high 12's/low 13's.
