Default bad transmission forks???

ok well i just went to an ******* mechanic. i told him it is hard to get into 1st gear and 2nd gear feels a little funny when shifting, he said he heard a humming noise and from what he felt he needed to replace my hole tranny for $750 cause my "forks" were shot. then i had a 5 minute lecture on selling my "riceburner" civic and get a nissan, ok so what do u guys think, was he tryign to hustle me or could it really be the forks??

before you get ripped off, what year is your car? how many miles on the tranny? do you have fluid in your clutch master cylinder? it could also be that your clutch needs to be changed.
