Is it the clutch or the tranny?
Trannys aren't my strong point so I figured I'd ask around. My tranny feels loose when I shift, doesn't have that crisp shifting anymore, like when I first got it. Was just wondering if that was something a new clutch would fix or if that is the trans itself being loose? I'm not THAT worried, since I'm not keeping this engine/trans but it would be nice to upgrade it while I had it. Thx!
Do you mean that your shifter is loose even when it's in gear? That just means the rubber bushings on your shift linkage are worn out, and it needs to be adjusted a bit after they're replaced.
Kind of hard to explain. You know when you get a new car, shifting from one gear to the next just has that crisp feel to it, like new car shifting!?!? Well, mine's gotten kind of spongy, like it doesn't click right to the gear. There's a little play so sometimes when I'm accelerating through 1st, then shift to 2nd I grind the gear. I know it's not my shifting, cuz it only does it from 1st to 2nd. But when it's in gear (any) it isn't loose at all. Gonna live w/it til I get my swap, just wondering what was causing it.
Tranny has 132k on it (to the best of my knowledge.) But it has been owned by only two other people, both female and babied, and driven locally never taken on any long trips. So I have been expecting to have to replace little things here and there to wear-and-tear. Could you explain synchros to me? (just an overview, tried searching for it, and didn't get much) And how would a new clutch benefit if the synchros or even if my 2nd gear is going out?
