Default friction point on 89 civic

i have a 1989 civic hatchback. a month or two ago i put in a new stage one clutch because the stock one gave out on me. i didnt have the chance to drive it before i put the new clutch on but the friction point on the clutch now is different from anyother car i have ever driven. it is small. i mean, most of the clutch is just free play but a small section controls the whole clutch. any ideas on why? or is it just how the clutch is on these cars?
