grinding noise?

i have a 2000 honda civic ex and when i go to put it in reverse it makes a grinding noise. its a 5spd manual. it doesnt do it all the time but if i try to do it fast it will but not when i do it slow.

It's pretty common, but have you checked the level of the MT fluid? You might also consider draining and replacing the fluid. Use genuine Honda MTF.

very much common. reverse is a non sychronized gear set. i always go into 1st and 2nd before going into reverse. doesnt grind at all that way.
