holy stiff shifter batman!!
hey folks,
all of the sudden, my shift is stiff as hell after sitting for a while. It didn't do this at all and then, BAM! one day i get in and it's stiff as a board. The colder it is the worse, and it gets better as i drive but not like it was last month.
Any thoughts? 2000 EX 5speed.

First off, is it a stock shifter or a short throw? Second, how long has it been since you changed the MT fluid? Also, have you had any problems with the tranny once it is ata normal operating temp?
It is a short throw shifter, which was installed when i purchased the car. I haven't own the car too long, under a year-so i haven't changed the MT fluid at all. I too was thining that me be the problem but didn't know if this situation was a common "honda thing". Once it gets to operating temp it becomes "better" but not a good as it was a couple weeks ago. Right before this happened i went on vacation. I drove from Northwestern PA to Central Florida. Maybe the change in temp did something??
the MT fluid wont help you switch, but you can feel a smother engagement when you let off the clutch....also, your short through will mostlikley have barings where the bolt goes threw....check that bolt, if its to tight, it will be a pain to move the shifter, and the bearings, if there rusty, it will make it tighter, and since its cold, we all know metal contracts as it gets cold making the tension higher, thus makeing the shifter stiff....and as it warms up, it gets better.... i hope this helped as they are my only ideas....oh, and dont think that becuase i said changing your MT fluid wont make your shifter softer that you shouldnt do it. its cheap, doesnt take to long, and you will deffentaly notice a differeance....also, my dealer told me to use 10-30 motor oil instead of MT fluid, he said he could sell me some but its more expensive, and they use 10-30 on cars they get....he also said AT's are the only ones that are "picky" about what kind of fluid they get. plus synthetic 10-30 will last forever and it stays smooth
ive just skimmed through this thread, and dont really kno if this is what your looking for..but anyway..sometimes on hondas the shifter is right above the exhaust and which will make the shifter hard to shift because it becomes a lubrication problem...just lubircate the shifter brushing and stuff and it should be a-ok
