Default Shudder on take off

I have a '96 Civic LX with a 5speed. It has 105,000 miles on it. The clutch, flywheel, bearings, etc. are all original.

Lately, I notice when I'm in first gear and taking off from a dead stop, I get a shudder when as the clutch engages and the car starts to move. Other than that, it drives great. It seems to get better after the car has warmed up. It also isn't as bad if I give the car a little more gas than what I normally should. I have been driving a stick shift for 25+ years, so I don't think it's me. The car does not make any strange or unusual noises.

I'm guessing possible problems could be clutch , flywheel, or engine mounts.

Any suggestions?

- John

It only does it when taking off?not to come off offensive but i would say that you need to ge use to the clutch more cause it sounds like the car is almost to the point of stalling.

that or the clutch is going out on it maybe...

It really doesn't act like it's about to stall, it just shudders a bit. I just called up the local Honda dealership and they told me it would be around $1,500.00 to replace the clutch kit. YIKES!!!! I'm waiting for AAMCO to call me back with a price right now.

clutch chatter........common with aftermarket clutches and worn clutches. usually caused by excessive pressure plate pressure, non organice disc's or hot spots on the flywheel and pressure plate. id recomend a new clutch kit. my accord does the same thing and is in need of a new clutch.

i have the same problem, i have a 92 civic lx 5spd and i hear a noise but im not sure if its the same, but wen i launch and the clutch engages in first i hear a noise, at first i thought it was my tires chirping but the mechanics who put my clutch in didnt cut the flywheel properly. so i belivee this is what caused it, ( good for nothing ****heads i paid $500 for the clutch job) and yea i have a stage 1 racign compeittion clutch. my other mechanic said don worry about it just deal with the noise so i dont know. anyway i wouldnt buy a whole new clutch kit jut to get rid of the noise anyway good luck

I just heard back from AAMCO and a clutch kit installed is a little over $900.00 if I go with OEM Honda parts. It's around $800.00 if I go with an aftermarket clutch kit. The brand is LUK . Does anyone know anything about this brand? Would I be better off to spend the extra $$$ and go with OEM Honda?

Second, you can find better things to spendyour $500 and wait with the clutch until it starts to really die..

$150 in a exedy oem clutch kit
$50 in a helms manual
take a day to change your clutch assuming you have tools. its a very good learning experience and may help you to feel more comfortable with future repairs.
