To get the best sound I could out of my old speakers, I first figured out the max volume I would normally listen at, then turned off my amp, and turned up the volume a little higher than that, and adjusted the eq/filter settings so that I wouldn't get any distortion while playing a song with lots of bass. Then I turned the amp back on and just adjusted the sub volume to get the amount of bass I wanted. Worked pretty well for me.
