Back when i first got my car I made these elaborate Audio Switches so my RCAs would switch from my head unit to my Zen which was on a docking station...
I only had a 240W amp and it actually worked out really really good...... And sicne i had 2 switches i could have the front playing the stereo and the back playing from my mp3 player....(didnt sound good but it freeked people out). Now i have a H/U with usb/sd/aux in and that seems to be working fine....im back to just using mp3 cds since they hold like 200 songs are easier to change.

You lose a lot more than just features. A HU will actually process the sound to feed the amps, whiel the ipod, will basically be like using your car as headphones.
