Default Stereo went out

For those of you who don't know me, I've got a '99 EX Sedan. Anyways, I have some cheap junkyard speakers in the back and up front I had just installed the left one. The back ones have been working fine for the last few months. I put the left on ein yetserday and everything was working pretty well (note: I am still using the factory "head unit") and I was playing my ipod through the tape player like I normally do, and it was working fine, when all of a sudden tonight, the audio just stopped. CD player turns on radio turns on, tape player turns on, but no audio. Anyone know what might cause this?

I think if there is a short in any one of the speakers or the speaker wiring, the amplifier will completely shut down and none of the speakers will play. Most aftermarket HU's work that way so I would think the factory one would too.

If I find the short how to I make the aplifier (which is technically built into the "head unit) come back on?

If you find the short and correct it, it should just come back on by itself. You may need to turn the HU off and then back on again.

I found what might have caused a short and fixed it. There are not other "shorts" that I know of since I haven't messed with anything else on the system. I'm think I'm just gonna get new stereo system eventually.

Not to be crude but with factory receiver and "junk yard speakers" I dono if it would be worth your time to continue looking for the problem. I think its the head unit myself...

Yeah I've decided I'm gonna get rid of it and put a new one in once I get a job.

You can try this - Fix the short that you think is the problem, then disconnect the headunit (ie physically pull the cable out the back) and then leave it off for about 5 - 10 mins. After you have had time to go make a cup of coffee, go back out to the car and then re-connect the head unit. Completing this process should have reset the circuit protection system. If this doesnt fix it post here again.

Nope nothing. I plugged it back in and plugged in one of the speakers and nothing. I don't think its the speaker either because I used a voltmeter to test the resistance and its still 4 ohms. Weird thing is when I turned on the CD player I put the voltmeter to the speaker leads and I got a constant DC voltate of like 3.3 V and when I switched it to AC it was virtually nothing.

You should measure about 6 volts DC from every speaker wire to ground. Try unplugging the head unit and at the plug, measure resistance from every speaker wire in the car to ground. Should be open circuit. Then measure across each speaker, should be about 4 ohms. If the speakers and wiring are OK, must be a faulty head unit.
