Default Understanding Car audio

Hey,

Well before I buy a system im trying to understand exactly how all this works so im going to make sure I got it right and hopefully you guys can correct me if im wrong. When im buying an amp it will come rated with So many R.M.S. (IE a 1000W R.M.S amp: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_amps.php?amp_id=221 <-- Using to learn). So if I wanted to run 2 subs which have a max RMS rating of say 500 I could used that 1000 R.M.S amp to run both subs correct? Also That 1000 watt amp I listed from JL audio has 2 channels correct? Generally what is a good RMS rating to look for on a sub? Some im looking at have 250-300 but I see very few with more then that (unless of course there extremely expensive). Also what is the point of a speaker listing "1200" watts if there RMS is only 300~?

Thanks for your time and ill probably have more questions. I just want to make sure im understanding this stuff right. I may have it all wrong

OK RMS is basically the consistent power flow of the amp, or what power the speaker/sub can constantly handle. The peak power is what the sub/speaker can handle at one point in time, or for a VERY short duration.

Now as for the JL amp, that is a very nice amp IMO. I'm also gonna say this... there is a lot of crap on that amp you don't need, and you most likely wouldn't use, again this is IMO.
As for running two 500W RMS subs on that amp, I'm really not sure, I'm being confused by the fact that JL is claiming it puts out 1000W at an ohm RANGE of 1.5-4 which from my understanding is impossible. Different ohm levels should yeild different RMS wattage outputs. I could be wrong here, or maybe JL has found someway to actually do that, but I don't think so, what I think is that they are claiming it will put out 1000W RMS at 1.5 ohms stable, but also can support 2, 4 ohm setups.

I think that amp puts out 1000w rms bridged. Which would be putting 1000w to each sub.
